Welcome to the NEWSLETTER Issue 03-2008

Thursday, 20. November 2008

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Optoelectronics, explosion protection, safety bus systems and safety-related control technology are four important items of our fair presentation at SPS/ IPC/ DRIVES. We will present you interesting products for all four domains. Visiting us in Hall 9, Booth 450 is highly recommended!

Time-saving: more information with one click To give you a fast overview of the current themes of machine safety and to save time, this newsletter will only include a few notes, e.g. on new products, new standards or user reports. If you want to know more about a specific subject, just click the link and you will be redirected to the detailed information.

We hope you enjoy our newsletter. Do not hesitate to send us your feedback - comments and suggestions as well as critical reviews - and feel free to forward it to your interested colleagues!

Explosion-proof version of the key transfer system

The Schmersal Group gradually enlarges its programme of (safety) switchgear for explosion protection and now presents the explosion-proof version of the SHGV key transfer system. The central units of the EX-SVM series and the interlocking devices of the EX-SHGV type for the safety guards are suitable for use in the Ex Zones 1 and 2 (Gas-Ex) or 21 and 22 (Dust-Ex).

Furthermore, individual key se-lector switches (EX-SHGV/ESS), which enable interrupting or switching off the automatic mode of the machine, are available for mounting onto the machine. These switches are certified for the Ex Zones 2 (Gas-Ex) and 22 (Dust-Ex)  more

High-grade steel safety sensor with protection class IP 69K - The CSS 30S

With the CSS technology, the Schmersal Group has developed an innovative operating principle for non-contact safety sensors, which enables, amongst other things, the series-wiring of maximum 31 sensors through intelligent communication and diagnostic possibilities without detriment to the safety category. The advantages of this technology now are also available to hygiene-critical domains.  more

New Centre of Competence for optoelectronics: the Schmersal Group takes over Safety Control GmbH and Safety Protec GmbH

As of 2008.10.1, the Schmersal Group has integrated the company Safety Control GmbH located at Mühldorf/ Inn and its sister company Safety Protec GmbH in the corporate group, thus extending its product portfolio in the domain of safety-related optoelectronics with high-quality and practice-oriented series.

The product programme includes universally applicable safety light curtains and light grids as well as designs with protection class IP69K for very rough ambient conditions or hygiene-critical applications and last but not least the most compact safety light grid of the world for control category 4 to EN 954-1. The Schmersal Group will integrate Safety Control/ Safety Protec GmbH in its production network as Competence Centre for Optoelectronics  more

Standards

One safety switch or two?

According to the new safety standard EN ISO 13849-1, two safety switches are basically required if a safety guard presenting higher risks needs to be monitored and interlocked. However, if switchgear of the AZM 200 and MZM 100 series is used, only one device is needed. These series integrate a second CSS sensor, which can be used for the safety guard monitoring. This feature enables the machine builder to monitor both the position of the guard and possible actuator "tampering" with one single device. The CSS technology, which is based upon the pulse-echo principle, is classified as "PDF-M" to EN 60947-5-3 and therefore guarantees a high safety level. Data sheet:   MZM 100   AZM 200

Application

Meat-processing machinery: hygiene at the man-machine interface

The control units of the machines from Seydelmann are built from scratch accord-ing to the principles of hygiene-compliant design and offer a highly ergonomic operation as well. In this way, the man-machine interface also meets the highest requirements. The control elements used are pushbuttons, indicator lights, (key) selector switches, potentiometer drives and joystick switches from Elan, which have been developed especially for food-processing machinery. As the safety technology is regarded, the company uses safety switchgear from Schmersal.  more
