Our switchgear make a major contribution to this safety. Elevator technology indeed is one of the industries, in which we have acquired specific knowhow and for which we offer customised switchgear since the early days of our company’s existence.
Our elevator switchgear lock and monitor the elevator doors. They are used for various applications both in the active and the passive safety circuit of the elevator system either to monitor individual components or as electrically resettable limit switch in the shaft head or in the shaft pit. We also have developed customised switchgear for special applications such as the electrical shutdown of the elevator system upon activation of the speed governor.
With this comprehensive programme, we can offer the manufacturers of elevators and escalators a large variety of switchgear and switching systems, which meet the harmonised requirements of the worldwide applicable directives and standards. Besides tried-and-tested technologies, we also implement innovative methods offering technical and economical advantages, for instance the USP non-contact positioning system, which is used in thousands of elevators all over the world.
We successfully collaborate with the world market leaders as well as many medium-sized manufacturers of elevator technology from all over the globe. Our switchgear are used, wherever high-rise buildings are erected or elevators are modernized. The spectrum ranges from apartment towers and multi-storey buildings in Sao Paulo, London, Shanghai or Munich over residential buildings all over the world up to freight elevators in industrial buildings.

The elevator technology is currently facing major challenges, as the cost pressure keeps increasing. Nowadays, elevator constructions, which can be quickly assembled and put into operation, are in great demand. These are the specifications that we keep in mind when developing new generations of elevator switchgear, whereby an increasing importance is attached to the customer assembly aspect as well.
Our elevator switchgear are frequently used for the modernisation of existing elevator systems. We offer a safety-monitoring module as interface for the USP non-contact absolute encoder to convert the measured absolute values into 24 VDC signals. In this way, modern techniques can be integrated in the existing older technology.
PESSRAL, a supplement to the European standard EN 81-1/2, lays the foundations for the integration of programmable electronic safety bus systems in the elevator technology. The implementation of this directive will have significant impact on the future construction of elevator systems.
The Schmersal Group has acquired comprehensive experience with programmable safety controllers in machinery and plant construction and is actively participating to the discussion regarding PESSRAL and the development of programmable electronic safety systems for the elevator construction.
PESSRAL will also influence the relations of the manufacturers of elevator switchgear and controllers with their customers of the elevator construction industry. We therefore are in contact with the medium-sized controller manufacturers with the objective to establish standards and to commonly offer complete safety systems. This approach will help the medium-sized specialists strengthening their position on the fiercely competitive market and make us, together with our partners, the pioneer of this new technology on the elevator market.
Switch the USP on and it will give you the absolute position value of your elevator. You can link the USP direct to your elevator controller via RS485 or CANopen interface or you can use the Parallel Interface USP-PI to generate digital outputs, similar to a standard magnet arrangement.

Schmersal follows the general trend in the industry, to deliver for medium and large production-lots, complete ready-to-install devices. That lowers total cost and simplifies logistics. Based on customer specification or our suggestions we supply switches complete with cable and termination, from a simple wire ferrule to solutions with connectors. The customer get’s a tested and ready-to-use device of high quality. Packaging and lot size are adjusted to customers requirements. Labeling of the device and packaging can include customer part numbers, barcodes and manufacturing date. That will fit our product seamless in the customer logistic concept. All this reduces cost of handling in your production.
